Are you struggling with consistency?

Are you struggling with consistency in your tennis game? Do you find yourself hitting great shots one minute, only to fall apart under pressure the next?

Consistency isn’t hitting 100 balls in a row

Contrary to popular belief, consistency isn’t about hitting 100 balls back and forth down the middle. Instead, it’s the ability to hit strokes that don’t break down under pressure.

The Tennis Consistency Test

So how can you measure your consistency and improve your game? Here’s a simple test you can do:

  1. Do a shadow swing, without a racket. This is swinging in place, with your hand as though your hand was a racket.
  2. Do a shadow swing with a racket.
  3. Hit against a ball machine.
  4. Play baseline points.
  5. Play a match, where you are returning.

After completing each step, compare your form. The more consistent you are, the more your form will look the same. The less consistent you are, the more your form will look different.

Why Consistency Matters

Consistency is important in tennis because it allows you to hit a repeatable shot, even under pressure. Once you can do that, you are able to focus on the strategy part of tennis, not technique. Practicing consistency helps reinforce neural pathways that let you swing without having to think about it.
